What is Skype?

Skype is a Peer to Peer voice service (You may also have heard it called VoIP - Voice over Internet Protocol). It works by sending your voice across the internet instead of across a standard phone line. For Skype to work, you need a microphone connected to your computer, speakers or headphones and the free Skype software installed.

What are the benefits of Skype?

Skype allows you to make free calls to any other computer connected to the internet (worldwide) with the Skype software installed. You can also upgrade your Skype account to allow you to make calls to any landline or mobile number worldwide very cheaply. If you have a broadband connection, the sound quality is actually far better than making the call using your landline or mobile phone.

Why Skype?

Skype is the most popular VoIP service currently available - there are almost 200 million users worldwide. However, there are lots of other company's which offer similar services (BT is currently working on their version).
